The research
Oxytocin
Hormone used in childbirth care; early findings that nasal oxytocin boosts trust and social behavior were not confirmed in larger trials.
Established prescription obstetric uses
What it is studied for
Oxytocin is a naturally occurring peptide hormone studied for its role in uterine contractions. Prescription products use that activity in defined obstetric settings under medical supervision. Researchers have also given it through the nose to study trust, social behavior and autism, building on animal research linking it to social attachment.
What the evidence says
Its established obstetric role does not establish general mood, bonding or wellness benefits. The Pitocin label requires clinical monitoring and does not support elective labor induction without a medical reason. A 2005 human study of nasal oxytocin reported more trust, but large replications found no clear effect, and a 24-week trial in 290 children and teens with autism found no social benefit over placebo.
